Friday Round-Up

End of Week Six! 13th October

Quiz Night

A reminder that our Quiz night is coming up on Fri 10 Nov at 7.30pm in the Barn.  For more info or to register email pta@st-johns-buckhursthill-essex.sch.uk
The St John's Christmas Bazaar is fast approaching and Petty Son & Prestwich have again offered to advertise it for us with their estate agent boards.  Every board earns the school £10 (up to £500) and it is fantastic publicity for our event.  So a win win!

If you can have a board outside your house please could you email Vicky on vicsd@hotmail.com with your full address (incl. postcode). Please also tell us if the board needs to be free standing. It should only be free standing if you have no wall, fence, post or soil that it can sit in (free standing boards are x3 more expensive to produce so please only request one if essential).

Please also make a note of the below dates relating to our Christmas Bazaar:

Fri 17 Nov - Non Uniform day for Bottle Tombola
Please bring in an unopened bottle of drink (alcoholic or soft) for your child to be able to wear their own clothes for the day.

Fri 17 & 24 Nov - Toys and books

Please bring in toys & books in good condition for our toy & book stall.  This year we will have a separate book stall so would like all kinds of books (not just children's books). Please only bring these items on these dates when there will be people to collect them at the school gates. DO NOT take them into the office.

Fri 1 Dec - Cakes & Sweets

Please donate either cakes on a plate or wrapped sweets in a bag to support our home produce stall.  Make sure there is nothing containing nuts.

Due to health and safety regulations, we are legally obliged to refer anyone making cakes, biscuits etc to the Food Hygiene Regulations which are available from the school office.

The PTA would like to thank you for your continued support of our events and fundraising activities.

Year 6 children who walk home without an adult

It has been brought to our attention that there are a number of children in Year 6, who walk home without an adult. We are happy for this to occur, however we would ask all parents to complete a Permission to Walk Home Alone Form, which is available from Lisa Seal in the front office.

Computing & Safeguarding Advice:

Over half a million children are addicted to gambling according to the Gambling Commission. Much of this gambling will take place on smartphones and tablets.

You may have seen in the news this week that many major gambling sites make games that could appeal to younger children. Many of these sites will not require age verification or registration to try the games. Betting on football matches (as advertised during live football matches) can also be problematic.

If you suspect your child is gambling or likely to gamble the best thing to do is talk openly and honestly with your child about which websites and apps they are accessing and speak to your class teacher for further advice.

School Photographs

A huge thank you to Mrs Hodis and Mrs Hurst who helped organise our annual Individual School Photographs. I must say that it went incredibly smoothly and I have never seen all of the photographs taken quite so quickly, in all of my 15 years at the school. In fact, Mrs Hodis has set a bold challenge of getting them all taken and completed by lunch time in the next academic year! Challenge accepted!

Rotary Club

Thank you to also to Ann Haig for donating 100 purple crocus bulbs to the gardening club, for the ongoing fight against polio. Good luck to the Gardening Club Leaders (Helen Peet and Emma Wilkins) who are going to plant these bulbs with the children next week!

Football & Netball Teams

Congratulations to the Year 5&6 Football Team who stormed to victory in their first league game of the season, against our local rivals Buckhurst Hill Community Primary, in a score line of 3-1.

As we speak the squad are playing in a 7-a-side tournament at Chigwell, in the annual Football Rally. Best of luck to all the children involved and thanks to Rob Thomas and Jack Perez for organising this event. Good luck, too, to the Netball Team who are also playing in the Forest Netball Under 11 tournament at Redbridge. They also won their first league game against Hereward, earlier this week in a score line of 11-7. Thank you to Mrs Watkins for her coaching and steadfast support of this team.

Cross Country Teams

Well done to the Year 5/6 Cross Country Team who have been competing in the U12 Schools' Cross Country League over the last three weeks.  The races are run by Woodford Green Athletic Club and have taken place at Claybury Park and Ashton Playing Fields.  The Girls' Team of 13 girls led by Team Captain Jasmine Dolan ran brilliantly as did the 21 strong Boys' Team led by Team Captain Ciaran McLoughlin.   The boys were in first place in Week 1, but had gone down to second place in Week 2 so waiting for the final result was a nail biting event!  The A team (Arthur Maskell, Jack Marjason, Ciaran McLoughlin, Lucas Panayi, Flynn Scrivener, Milosz Wilson) had put in a sterling performance and achieved a score of 31.  When the race was over the results were read out in the Club House (see website for photo) and there were cheers as, for the first time in over 20 years of competing, the Boys' Team had won the trophy for St. John's. Thank you to the dedicated Team Managers – Mrs Khachy, Mrs Watkins and Mrs Deighton.
